As part of my UL license, there is a module on "pyrotechnik einweisung". What I like to do is try learn as much as I can in English first before the course as then I am better in understanding the teaching in German.
Does anyone have any recommended readings in english for this?

Don′t overcomplicate this topic. As long as you′re just renting planes the course is barely useful in practice honestly. Just learning the questions from the official catalogue is more than enough IMHO.
